Hamlet, Prince of Denmark

The perfect play becomes the perfect opera. In 2015, the award-winning University of Mississippi Opera Theatre ensemble, under the direction of Julia Aubrey, in partnership with the Ford Center for the Performing Arts, presented the world premiere of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark. Composed by UM alumna Nancy Van de Vate and based on William Shakespeare’s classic play, the opera featured faculty, students and alumni in leading roles and in the orchestra for this exciting event. Following the premiere, the cast and crew took the production to Prague, Czech Republic, for a performance with the Moravian Philharmonic under the baton of Petr Vronsky. The mayor of Prague declared that day in honor of of the premiere. You can see the official proclamation attached here.
