Folk instrument orchestras have been popular in Russia for more than 150 years. Originally made up of the plucked instruments of the dorma and balalaika families, in recent decades the addition of accordions and nonfolk instruments such as the flute and oboe has resulted in ensembles with a uniquely engaging sound.

Under the leadership of conductor Boris Varon, the orchestra features top-notch professional soloists and outstanding students from Moscow’s Gnessin Russian Academy of Music, one of Russia’s most prestigious conservatories. This engaging pops concert, which features an array of popular selections as well as traditional Russian folk music, will delight a broad variety of musical tastes.
