Benjamin Britten’s charming comic opera takes the audience on a journey to East Suffolk at the turn of the 20th century. The delightful idiosyncratic characters romp through a May Day festival that goes awry when the shy young man they elect as May King chooses to break free of society’s strictures, and his own pent-up frustration, to experience life’s pleasures. Considered one of the best British operas written in the early 20th century, Britten’s music perfectly describes the characters and provides expert comic timing for the story. Sung by graduate and undergraduate vocal music majors, and supported by the UM Orchestra, Albert Herring provides an evening of exciting music and bold comedy.
